On May 15th, we invited reporters to hear what we made of this year’s fresh crop of annual reports.

We think that great corporate reporting is concise, insightful, honest, and truly valuable for investors.

Three big takeaways from the event:

1. The bigger, the better? Not really

Although it’s fair to imagine that the biggest companies, with lots of resources and staff, will have an easier time of it, that’s not true. These firms seem to be more conservative and less transparent, with the most sizeable constituents of the FTSE 100 missing out on places in our top 10.

2. The very best are forward-looking, fair and balanced, clear and concise throughout

Our ‘top 3’ reports – Fresnillo, Standard Chartered and Taylor Wimpey – all nailed these vital attributes. It’s clear that a strong overall approach trumps the inclusion of any particular ‘best-practice’ content.

3. Of course, there’s room for improvement

While reports keep on getting better, investors still want in-depth coverage of future plans and a more fair and balanced tone. Meanwhile, a focus on reducing page counts among many is unfortunately starting to get in the way of high-quality reporting.
